Artist of the Week: Carrie Mae Weems

Artist of the Week: Carrie Mae Weems

This week’s #artistinspirationis Carrie Mae Weems, who uses text and her own image to explore issues of identity, race, gender, and societal roles through photography and video. Weems’s photographs are at once unsettling and familiar. In “The Kitchen Table Series,” she uses the setting of the kitchen table to portray a variety of women, ranging from the dutiful wife to the empowered, self-possessed woman.
