In his lifetime, Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky explored how to move beyond two dimensions in his work. He codified this idea in his book, Point and Line to Plane.
In the era of Zoom for work, school, and socializing, we are confined to a two-dimensional version of reality and culture. We are long separated from the opportunity to attend concerts, museums, and ballets. The irony is, we need those moments of beauty and human connection now more than ever.
Point and Line to Plane is a collaborative project between Hunter College visual artists, musicians and composers, and dancers – an opportunity for students to collaborate in a time when that is increasingly difficult to do so culminating in a multidimensional livestream performance.

Proposals are open on a rolling basis. They are open to both undergraduate and graduate musicians, composers, and dancers as well as graduate media artists in the IMA MFA.
Proposals are in lieu of a general interest meeting and are meant to gauge interest and funnel artists into appropriate channels. Once your proposal has been reviewed, you will be added to a Discord channel with a group of artists in line with your work. From there, you will have a chance to make more formal decisions about your collaborators and performance.
Music submissions can include either an idea for an original work or a non-copyright restricted classical piece you would like to perform.
Dance submissions can be conceptual or a description of a work you would like to do. This can be formally developed once you have been put in touch with a collaborator.
Media arts submissions are open to IMA MFA students. They should be animations that act as a container for the livestream. Examples and formats will be provided.
Final video performances are due August 31st, and the final performance will be live-streamed in September of the Fall 2021 semester. Please contact OOA@hunter.cuny.edu with any urgent questions.
